Cheree' here! Grandma's Beef Brisket has been a family favorite in our home since I married into the family 33 years ago (and many years before). My husband's sweet grandmother used to make this for us just about every time we would visit. It was her specialty and she could put the sting on it!

I've made it a gazillion times since she passed away but mine NEVER tastes like grandmas. Don't get me wrong, it's still delicious but you know how it goes ~ I think the memories just make it sweeter. 🙂

How to cook beef brisket in the oven

I like to trim the fat evenly across the top of the brisket to about 1/4-inch thick.  Then season with the beef brisket rub according to the recipe. If you're not making the brisket as a freezer meal then follow the instructions for seasoning, wrap in foil and refrigerate overnight.

Preheat oven 275°F. Wrap in foil and cook in the oven until the internal temperature on a meat thermometer reaches 175°F. For our recipe, that will be about 5 hours.

The general rule of thumb is to plan on between 30-60 minutes per pound. So if you have a larger piece of meat it will take longer. Be sure to plan accordingly!

How do you make beef brisket tender?

Low and Slow is the name of the game when cooking brisket. You'll also want to always wrap it in foil. If you don't, it will dry out and be ruined. Wrapping will keep all the moisture and juices flowing through the meat.

What size brisket should I buy?

A 5-6 pound beef brisket is a good size for about 6-8 people. A good rule of thumb is to calculate about ½ pound per person, uncooked weight. I like to buy a bit more so guests can take a larger portion and that also ensures we will have some leftover. Leftover brisket makes the yummiest sandwiches! 🙂

What can I use instead of brisket?

If you can't find an affordable brisket (which can often be the case right now) then a chuck roast will work great as well.

What to serve with beef brisket?

So, grandma always served “cheesy potatoes” (aka scalloped potatoes), southern green beans, some sort of fruit salad (with marshmallows) and dinner rolls when she made brisket for us. But, there are so many sides that will go perfectly.

I like to bake some potatoes wrapped in foil while the brisket is cooking. Those cook-all-day baked potatoes are the best! Here are a few other ideas:

Can you freeze brisket?

Absolutely! Even though this recipe has been passed down over several generations and cooked fresh, we made it into a freezer meal because it just works so well. You can freeze the brisket after you purchase and then follow the recipe to make now or follow the recipe as written and it will be ready to go straight from the freezer to the oven!
